Remember, it will be EASY for you to upload to us if the export is done in the following manner: Have your kids do it when they export their movies so you don't have to. ** If you are good with compressing, just do what works for you...this is just a quick tip **
1. Once the kids export their movie as "full quality" they can open it in Quick Time.
2. With the movie opened In Quick Time, click FILE > SAVE AS (or FILE >EXPORT…depending on your version of QT).
3. Change the FORMAT to "720p".
4. Click SAVE or EXPORT.
5. Remember, in the end, the file size of the finished film should be 299 MB or less. The 720p will keep the quality high while making it manageable to upload. If you have a comfort level in compressing, just do what works for you. Keep the quality as high as possible and the file size 299 MB or less.
** We are simply looking to "shrink" the file size for a faster upload time while keeping the film in "good" quality **
Email me with any questions. I will check my email OFTEN today. My cell is ---------- if you need me, but my office is a bit of a cellphone black hole in case I don't respond quickly.
TEACHERS: ALL FILMS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO US by midnight on the day AFTER Day 10... essentially 'Day 11'. The judges get them on what would essentially be 'Day 12'. Any film NOT submitted by the end of the day on 'Day 11' will be disqualified. Put the films on a flash drive or something and take them home if need be. We will cross-reference your student submission list with your actual film uploads. If we see a discrepancy, we will contact you.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITES on Day 10
1. By 4pm on Day 10, the STUDENT (pick a representative/director for each film) must 100% go to this page on our site: http://www.tendayfilm.org/submit-final.html and fill out the online form to (a) tell us that their film is complete and (b) UPLOAD THEIR POSTER. This is a MUST!!!
** Note: The student that fills out the online form MUST have the poster on his or her computer. That student fills out the completion form AND uploads the poster all at the same time. **
2. I would have your kids click on that page during the day today to see what it looks like so they aren't overwhelmed at the last minute. It's also a tab across the top page of the 10 Day site called "SUBMIT FINAL". It will take them 10-15 minutes to complete it.
3. That online form must be completed by 4pm on DAY 10 or their film will be disqualified. All submissions are time-stamped on our end. We suggest they start filling out that form around 3:30pm just to be safe.
OPENING SLATE
1. Every single film needs a slate at the beginning of the film. It is listed under Letter O of the rules, see this sample:
http://www.tendayfilm.org/sample-opening-slate.html.
Please make sure your kids put this slate, according to the rules, in the beginning of their film! Make sure the info on the slate is 100% accurate. Students, often times, put the wrong GENRE on the slate or there is confusion on the title of the film. Please double check them on that.
Ultimately, you will be responsible for assuring that the film(s) were done on time and the students filled out that form in good faith.
Good luck with Day 9!
NAMING FILMS - the FILE name
1. By 4pm on Day 10, the STUDENT gives YOU the finished film (compressed to 299 MB or less).
** This is VERY IMPORTANT for organization. We need to identify... AT A GLANCE... the name of the movie and the school. THE FILE NAME allows us to make sure EVERY FILM was submitted. PLEASE make every effort to name the file as you see in this email. **

Today is Day 8. Here is email 1 of 2 for today.
3 days to go. Kids are probably in full edit mode now.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Be 100% sure to impress upon your kids these BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
OPENING SLATE
Continue to make them aware of all the rules when it comes to their final edit. http://www.tendayfilmchallenge.com/filmmaking-rules.html.
Be sure they look at Rule O for some little things like the the opening slate, 1 second of black at the beginning and end of their film, and so forth.
Check out the Photo Gallery on the site. Lots of great pics. Send some Post Production pics! http://www.tendayfilm.org/upload.html

TITLE OF MOVIE
Remember: The FILM TITLE can not be the same as the line of dialogue. No movie is called "(line of dialogue here)"

TITLE OF MOVIE
Remember: The FILM TITLE can not be the same as the line of dialogue. No movie is called "(line of dialogue here)"
Today is Day 7. Here is email 1 of 2 for today.
I'm sure the editing will begin, but that doesn't mean some production still can't be happening. And remember, 4pm on Day 10 is when the films are due.
CLEARANCES
As the editing begins, please make sure that your students are aware that they must have CLEARANCE to use any licensed music. They can use all the pre-made songs in programs like Garageband or Final Cut. I know some schools subscribe to royalty free music. Just be sure that they aren't randomly searching YouTube for music and downloading it for their film. As you know, they need permission to use other people's music.
PRODUCTION PHOTOS
If you have any more production pics, please upload them. In the next day or so, take some post-production pics.
POSTERS
Don't forget about posters. It should be a 13 x 19 sized poster laid out in PORTRAIT mode, not landscape. Send your kids to the 10 Day site and have them click on the NOMINEES tab to see past posters.
Be sure they name the poster file that same as the movie name. That will be super helpful for us after they upload it. You know what they do...they give files the most random names. Thanks.
Here are the poster rules: http://www.tendayfilm.org/movie-poster-rules.html
PS: Have any questions? Check our FAQ page: http://www.tendayfilm.org/faq.html

Today is Day 6. Here is email 1 of 3.
Today is probably still a production day. They should think about wrapping up today or tomorrow with their shooting.
I will be sending everyone another several emails later TODAY with directions for uploading the finished film.
Remember May 25th is your screening day. 9am doors open at the theatre. 10am the program begins. If you haven't done it already, be sure to get a sub and bus in place. Get that paperwork submitted. Only the students who made a film that is selected to appear at the screening and awards may attend. Admission is free, but we have to limit the number of people to only those who made a selected film. Not all films are guaranteed to appear at the screening.
This is a link to the theater's website and location
http://www.regmovies.com/Theatres/Theatre-Folder/Regal-Burlington-Stadium-20-1695
Keep taking behind the scenes pics of your kids during production! http://www.tendayfilm.org/upload.html

Today is Day 5.
Just for some pacing (no hard and fast rule here), your kids will probably be in full production mode today and Day 6. They may even be in production on Day 7.
Remember, no guns, no wielding knives as weapons, alcohol, drugs, profanity, or sexual conduct in the film that would be inappropriate for school viewing.
In the end, we all want the kids to make great films. If you have the go-getters who need time after school to shoot or want to come in during a lunch period to shoot or edit (when the time comes), we say go for it! Use your best judgment to keep the work within the normal limits of a school day. Just make sure they are staying on campus. *refer to Letter A in the "filmmaking rules" tab on the website*
The editing will probably begin sometime on Day 7. Only a suggestion. Whatever is working for you and your kids is always the way to go.
You will get the info soon on how to send us your films. We would like you to do a test to make sure it's all good to go.
Keep sending pics! http://www.tendayfilm.org/upload.html
Don't forget about shooting and editing an opening title sequence: It is 100% required in every film. http://www.tendayfilm.org/sample-opening-title-sequence.html

Today is Day 4.
The kids are probably in production mode now.
Remember, adults should only be secondary characters, not the lead actors or actresses. *refer to Letter A in the "filmmaking rules" tab on the website*
Locations: Stay on campus within the 'normal limits of a school day'. CITY SCHOOLS: outdoor production should be limited to your school grounds (just like suburban schools) and the sidewalks on the permitter of your building. Anything that is not on the sidewalk permitter MUST be school district property or it can not be used. (just like suburban schools). *refer to Letter A in the "filmmaking rules" tab on the website*
Don't lose sight of the poster. Also, make sure they are including the required elements in their films.
In the next couple of days, we will be giving the teachers instructions about submitting your finished films for judging. The teachers are the ones who actually send us the movies, not the kids. The kids fill out a form online on Day 10 AND submit their posters on that same form. It's a tab on our site called 'SUBMIT FINAL'. Here's the direct link: http://www.tendayfilm.org/submit-final.html
Make sure your kids have seen this page PRIOR to Day 10 so they don't feel overwhelmed.
Good luck. Any questions, email me! And keep sending production pics. http://www.tendayfilm.org/upload.html

Day 3.
I would think that your students should be wrapping up with Pre-Production. They might even start shooting today? Remember, all films must be shot on campus and no cameras should go home during the evening or on the weekends. *refer to Letter A in the "filmmaking rules" tab on the website*
The students should be the principal actors in the film. Adults are fine, but they should not be the main actors in the film. Don't write films with featured adult roles. *refer to Letter A in the "filmmaking rules" tab on the website*
Other than that, good luck today. If you haven't uploaded a pre-production pic, feel free to upload something today. We are constantly updating the photo gallery when the pics come in so be sure to check it out on the website.
Also, don't forget that by the end of the challenge your films must have a poster. See the rules for the poster at http://www.tendayfilm.org/movie-poster-rules.html
Be sure to remind your students that the line of dialogue can NOT be the title of the film. It is listed in the rules and on the Movie Poster rules page.

Day 1
HERE ARE YOUR REQUIRED ELEMENTS
Character : Dalton/ Dolly Hughes
Backstory: Is known for being late
Prop: a watch
Line of Dialogue: two steps forward, three steps back
* The backstory MUST be attached to the assigned Character.
* Remember, the line of dialogue must be verbatim and ANYONE can say it.
* Anyone in the film can handle the prop
The Genres can be found at http://www.tendayfilm.org/genres.html....but here they are...
The special trade-in genre is: Greek Mythology
OTHER NOTES FOR TODAY
Remember, the (optional) cinematic technique is the use of either the HIGH ANGLE or LOW ANGLE shot. There will be an award for Best Use of Technique.
Remember to DRAW GENRES FROM A HAT FOR EACH FILMMAKING TEAM TODAY -- not one genre per school -- Give them the option of "trading in" their chosen genre for that special trade-in genre we gave you. It is the ONLY WAY THEY CAN CHANGE the genre that they just chose from the hat. You should absolutely reveal the 'trade in' genre to them before they select it.
All films must be shot on the campus of your school. Students should remain on the CAMPUS of your school (green screen is 100% acceptable of course and students should have the rights to use any background that they green screen.)
NO STOCK VIDEO permitted.
Try to take some quick photos today and upload them: http://www.tendayfilm.org/upload.html Cellphone pics are fine. We'd love to have "team" photos identified by team name if you can, but not necessary. I will post them on the 10 Day Website and on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
Good luck today. They should begin writing! Remember: a 3 minute MINIMUM - 4 minute MAXIMUM film when it's all said and done. Not being within the required time parameters will result in a disqualification.

1 Month To Go
1. Films MUST be 3-4 minutes max, but a 15-second ending "scrolling credits" can be ADDED to the end. So, a film can have a running time of 4:15 (Ending credits can not contain anything pertinent to the plot of the film. Their sole use is for credits.)
2. Genres. Draw from a hat the 10 Genres we assigned to you in a previous email (or check the website). Be sure to make films with a variety of genres in your school.
Also, students will have the opportunity to "trade-in" their genre choice that they "pulled from a hat." We will release that "trade-in" genre on Day 1 with the other information. Choosing that option is the only way a student can change their genre.
3. The cinematic technique is the use of either a HIGH ANGLE or LOW ANGLE shot and is OPTIONAL, but awarded. The same technique will be used in every film in the Challenge. http://www.tendayfilm.org/cinematic-technique.html
4. Familiarize your kids with this rule on our 'Rules' page:
Rule S. The 10 Day Film Challenge organizers/judges may, in their sole discretion, DISQUALIFY entries deemed to be inappropriate (including but not limited to the use of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, knives as weapons, profanity, or sexual conduct not appropriate for school viewing) or otherwise non-compliant as per ANY of the rules of the 10 Day Film Challenge. DISQUALIFICATIONS may also specifically result from inaccurate reading/presentation of the required line of dialogue; inaccurate identification of the required character and backstory; inaccurate identification of the required prop or inaccurate identification of the genre.
5. A movie poster is required. 13 x 19 is the size. Here are the specific rules for the poster: http://www.tendayfilm.org/movie-poster-rules.html
All of this is updated on the website. Please familiarize yourself and the kids: http://www.tendayfilm.org/filmmaking-rules.html

A NEW scoring component was added to the Challenge. Every film MUST have an opening title sequence (in addition to a slate). The opening title sequence should be part of the actual 3-4 minute finished film. Generally actors names and the film title are important components.
There is a score on the scorecard for Opening Titles. Make sure your kids have opening titles somewhere in the beginning of their movie to get the points they need.
